Chiropody Services

We are pleased to welcome to our staff Mr. Justin Turner, a Registered Chiropodist with over 15 years experience.  He will be available to perform foot biomechanics/gait examinations, footwear education/advice and prescription of custom orthotic devices.

What is Chiropody?:  A chiropodist is a regulated health care professional who specializes in disease and disorders of the feet and is trained in an accredited chiropody program; in Ontario, the training is done at the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences in Toronto. The program involves both didactic and clinical training over three years and covers the topics of anatomy/physiology, microbiology, radiology, pharmacology, biomechanics (orthotics), wound care and surgery.

Who we see:  People of all ages who present with a foot condition that is causing pain or deformity such as hammer toes, bunions, heel pain, arch pain, pronation/supination disorders, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and arthritic feet. This clinic does not provide general practice services such as nail care, callous, warts etc.

During an appointment:  The chiropodist will complete a general medical history including the main complaint, perform a foot biomechanical and gait exam to determine if and how your foot mechanics are related to your foot problem.  A treatment plan including footwear education and if necessary a custom orthotic may then be initiated.

Custom orthotic devices:  Custom orthotics are a medical device used in the management of several foot conditions to relieve pain, protect and improve the function of the foot.  Prior to initiating orthotic therapy a detailed foot biomechanical and gait exam is performed to see if this is appropriate for you.

Not everyone needs an orthotic.  Several conditions can be managed by a change in footwear, or an inexpensive off the shelf shoe insert.  The chiropodist will discuss your condition and create an individual treatment plan that best suits your needs.

Fees:  The Chiropody assessment and custom orthotics may be partially covered by extended health insurance plans.  No referral is necessary to see the chiropodist, but may be necessary to obtain reimbursement from extended health insurance plans.  Please note that OHIP does not pay for any services provided by a chiropodist, therefore payment is due at the time of service.
