Postural Re-Education

Unfortunately, many of our daily activities bring us into a forward head position. Reading, computer work, gardening, and working on crafts are examples of activities that encourage slouched, round shouldered postures. Over time, adaptive changes occur in the muscles and joints, and it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain normal postural alignment. Poor posture often contributes to neck, shoulder and back pain. It affects ones balance and how the body moves.

Postural re-education involves more than pulling your shoulders back and standing up straight. The physiotherapists at the Kingston Injury Management Centre – Physiotherapy Clinic will conduct a postural assessment and develop an individualized treatment plan to meet your specific needs. Treatment may include joint mobilization and soft tissue stretching techniques, strengthening exercises for the upper back and shoulder girdle, stretching exercises, and advice on how to improve postural alignment during daily activities.
